This summer
I spend travelling around in South East Asia. I started in Indonesia, climbed a volcano in Lombok worked then as a tourguide in Malaysia later as an English Teacher in Myanmar and ended up in Bangkok before I flew back home.
As some of you might know: I am an absolute coffee addict and of course every morning I went to look around for the best coffee in town (the hotel coffee couldn’t really compete).
Asia is more known for its various sorts of tea than for coffee but I had some quite surprising coffee experiences, especially in Melaka, or Malacca (in Malay) in Malaysia.
In the following you find my Top 7 Melaka Coffeeshops and my Top 5 Kuala Lumpur Coffeeshops.
My Melaka Favourites
1. Ta Chi Nyonya House, Melaka
I had a rose infused coffee, which is quite a thing in Malaysia.
This is the Ta Chi Nyonya House, which is situated close to the river. You can just get off the boat on the river at the ’spices museum‘ and walk there within 10 minutes. They have typical Nyonya Cuisine which is the name for the typical Malaysian cuisine which is a blend of Chinese, Indian, Indonesian dishes. Find out more on this great blog on Nyonya Cuisine here.
They won several coffee cupping competitions and every cup comes with a cute image drawn on it.
Location: No 1, Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, 75100 Malacca, Malaysia

Opening times: Everyday except on Wednesdays 9.30-21:00
2. Mods Café, Melaka
I had the most expensive coffee ever (6€) in Mods Café in Melaka, even though everything is normally really cheap in Malaysia.
I didn’t look at the prize and was really surprised at the cashier. Normally a good coffee costs around 1,50€. I still don’t know why it was that expensive. It was served in a very small and very british tea cup and tastet really really good. Maybe they read poems to the coffee plant while growing. They roast the coffee themselves and yes it was somehow worth the 6€.

3. The Coffee Jar, Melaka
This couple is roasting and selling their coffee in the lovely town of Melaka- The Coffee Jar.
I stumbled upon this place randomly and directly loved the minimalistic interior design. Like some other restaurants/coffeeshops in Melaka they sell second hand books and cassettes. Really nice and cosy atmosphere and incredibly good coffee!

4. Backlane Coffee, Melaka
During my search for the best coffee in Melaka town I also stopped by at the Backlane Coffee which is in the back of a very fancy concept store.
I already had so much coffee that day that I skipped the tasting there but the cakes looked incredibly good and so did the coffee. People were sitting around and working on their laptops and it was quite a nice atmosphere. Nevertheless, the Coffee Jar is my number one coffee shop in Melaka.

Seeds Garden is a vegan restaurant in the centre of Melaka.
I seriously had the best vegan food there and the freshest carrot juice you can imagine.
The interiour design is really nice and you feel like in the cosy living room of a vagabond family. The roof window and the little fountain give a great atmosphere and you find little quotes, pictures and books in every corner.

My KL Favourites:
1. Coffee Amo, Kuala Lumpur
I saw some real 3D Latte Art in Coffee Amo in Kuala Lumpurs bustling Chinatown.
‚Keep calm and drink coffee‘
I’ve been watching those fascinating videos of 3D Latte Art and coulnd’t believe my eyes when I entered Coffee Amo and saw they do this kind of coffee. It is a very cosy coffeeshop in the first floor and a bit hidden. You enter it by walking up a very narrow staircase, walk through a built up area and find yourself in a arty space with lot’s of nice details and books and inspiration.

After 3 weeks in Bali, my need for Smoothie Bowls was quite big in the morning so I googled places in KL with such.
